Stripped down version of Microsoft Office that only provides you with limited versions (functionality-wise) of the famous Word and Excel
As you might be able to tell just by reading its name, Microsoft Office Starter 2010 is a stripped-down version of Microsoft Office 2010.
This particular 'lite' version used to come pre-bundled on computers and laptops from various manufacturers years ago, like Dell or HP and, since it's no longer officially supported, it can't be upgraded to a fully functional version of Office 2010 via online purchase.
However, you might still be able to find a proper use for it, especially if you're running an older version of Windows such as Windows Vista or Windows 7. Users running WIndows 8, 8.1, and Windows 10 won't be able to install this product, unfortunately.
Limited, but far from being useless
The first thing you should know about Microsoft Office Starter 2010 is the fact that it consists out of functionality-limited versions of Microsoft's famous word processing and spreadsheet apps, dubbed Word Starter 2010 and Excel Starter 2010 in this case (no PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook, we're afraid).
Speaking of limitations, we recommend you check out the Limitations section on our page since there are quite a few. For example, both Word Starter 2010 and Excel Starter 2010 don't come with support for Add-ins, Comments, and SmartArt Graphics, just to give you a taste of what's what.
The basic functionality of Word and Excel available in a lighter and a bit more user-friendly package
Still, though, the suite does not have any sort of time limitation, and you do get the chance to perform some of the most basic productivity tasks in the case of both apps, which, considering you're not exactly an Office power-user, it might just be enough to get the job done.

Probably even more important is the fact that Microsoft Office Starter 2010 is capable of opening documents edited with any full-fledged versions of the famous suite, even if there are features which are not included in the Starter edition, just as long as they're saved in the supported formats. Another incentive to check out the limitations section, since this Starter edition does not come with full file support.
Plan on using Office 2010 on a home-user level? Step this way, please...
Having said all that, you should have a pretty solid idea if Microsoft Office Starter 2010 is for you or not. To summarize a bit more thoroughly, if you're running a morally-outdated computer with Windows 7 and Vista, and you're not particularly keen on having the full package, and you're more than willing to trade off advanced functionality for a more lightweight package, then there's a good chance that Microsoft Office Starter 2010 won't disappoint.
